CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Grant Durrell’s place was an old house just outside of town, down several country lanes. Maya guessed that part of the reason he’d worked at Hastel’s was that it was close by.

She could feel her tension rising as she and Marco drove down the lane towards the house. A sign warned against trespassing, but Maya ignored it. They needed to talk to Grant, and they weren’t going to let that stop them.

The house was large, white painted, and slightly rickety looking, as if it hadn’t been cared for in years. There were the shells of a couple of cars out in front of it, halfway rebuilt. As they pulled up, the place seemed quiet, but Maya wasn’t about to believe that it was deserted that easily.

She led the way up to the front door. There was a screen across it, and Maya pulled it out of the way, ringing the doorbell. There was no answer. Maya rang it again, in case Grant simply hadn’t heard.

There was still no answer.

“He’s not here,” Marco said. “We should go and come back later.”

Maya knew that was what they ought to do. What they were required to do, in fact. Whatever else was going on, they were still officers of the law, which made what Maya was contemplating impossible.

“I want to get inside,” Maya said.

She saw Marco’s eyes widen.

“You know you can’t do that, Maya,” Marco said. “Without a warrant, you go in and any evidence you gather will be inadmissible.”

“And if I don’t go in, what then?” Maya demanded. “He gets away with this?”

“If it’s him.”

“A creepy guy with a history of harassing women, with a connection to the first victim, who threatened the first victim, who worked in the puzzle factory that probably produced the puzzle pieces that were left by the body.”

“You think a judge will buy that?” Marco asked.

Maya knew he had a point. They needed more in the way of physical evidence, but how were they meant to get that physical evidence without access to Grant Durrell’s place?

Maya made a call to her boss.

“Grey, how are things going over in Hastel?” he asked.

“I have a potential suspect, but I’m going to need a friendly judge if I’m going to get a warrant to search his house.”

“How friendly? How speculative is this?”

Maya set out what she’d found as best she could. “There seems to be a connection to a games manufacturer here, because puzzle pieces were left both with Christine Weller’s body and with another victim.”

“Another victim? You’re in town a day and already you’ve found a serial killer?”

She wasn’t sure if Harris sounded impressed or exasperated.

“I think so,” Maya replied. “I investigated at the manufacturer, and I’ve found a disgruntled former employee with a history of harassing women, who was fired when he got physical, and who made threats towards the first victim. Can you find a judge who will give me a warrant based on that?”

“I’ll try,” Harris said. “If they understand the stakes, there are one or two who might help.
